Supermodel Gia

Gia Carangi was reportedly the first real Supermodel no matter what Janice Dickerson says. Read her biography below, see photos and watch a video of Gia.

The talented and beautiful model known to so many as simply ‘Gia’ embraced the wild party scene of the New York clubs of the late 70’s and 80’s. Her life and dreams were destroyed when she became an avid drug user and addicted to heroin. She contracted AIDS and died at the age of only 26. You can go to her foundation’s website to see photos.A 1998 TV movie called ‘Gia’ has been made and it stars Angelina Jolie (who plays Gia), Kylie Travis, Elizabeth Mitchell, Eric Michael Cole, Mercedes Ruehl.

Gia Marie Carangi was born on January 29, 1960 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She tragically died on November 18, 1986 at the age of 26. Gia was a model during the late 1970’s and early 1980s’ and is considered to be the first supermodel though that title has often been given to although others including Janice Dickinson and Dorian Leigh. Supermodel Cindy Crawford was often called ‘Baby Gia’ because of her resemblance to Gia Carangi.

After being featured in Philadelphia newspaper ads, Gia moved to New York City at the age of 17, where she quickly rose up to top model ranks. She was the favorite model of many fashion photographers, including Francesco Scavullo, Arthur Elgort, Richard Avedon, and Chris von Wangenheim. She often said, “I didn’t build up to becoming a top model, I just became one.’

Her sexual orientation has long been gossiped about. Many of her peers considered her to be lesbian, others point to the fact she had relationships with men and call her bisexual. It was a time, some say, when those things mattered.

Gia Carangi was also the first to present unusual poses, facial expressions and gestures. She is credited by many in the fashion model industry to have created a new style of modeling, copied by models since then to now.

Gia was featured on the cover of many fashion magazines, including Vogue, April 1, 1979; Vogue Paris, April 1979; American Vogue, August 1980; Vogue Paris, August 1980; Italian Vogue, January 1981; and several issues of Cosmopolitan between 1979 and 1982.

Gia was a regular at all the hottest New York clubs. Her cocaine and heroine use was legendary. After becoming addicted to heroin, Gia Carangi’s modeling career rapidly declined. She later became infected with HIV and died on November 18, 1986 at the age of 26. Her death was not widely publicized and few people in the fashion industry knew of it. Carangi is thought to be one of the first famous women to die of AIDS.

In 1996, actress-screenwriter Zoë Tamerlis, herself a heroin addict who died of drug-related causes in 1999, was commissioned to write a screenplay based upon Gia Carangi’s life. This version of Gia was not produced, but after Tamerlis’ death, footage of Carangi, Tamerlis, photographers, Carangi’s family, and Sandy Linter discussing her life was incorporated into a 2003 documentary entitled The Self-Destruction of Gia.

gnosticism

Whereas Judaism and Christianity, and almost all pagan systems, hold that the soul attains its proper end by obedience of mind and will to the Supreme Power, i.e. by faith and works, it is markedly peculiar to Gnosticism that it places the salvation of the soul merely in the possession of a quasi-intuitive knowledge of the mysteries of the universe and of magic formulae indicative of that knowledge.

In the late 19th and the early 20th century, that view of Gnosticism was replaced with several groupings, and the discovery of the Nag Hammadi texts in 1945 greatly enhanced the understanding of Gnosticism.

Scholars have attributed the origins of gnosticism to a number of sources: the Greek mystery cults; Zoroastrianism; the Kabbalah of Judaism; and Egyptian religion.

Gnosticism envisaged the world as a series of emanations from the highest “One”, that produced a series of emanations.

While Gnosticism thus relies on personal religious experience as its primary authority, early “Christian” Gnostics did adopt their own versions of authoritative Scriptures, such as those found at Nag Hammadi in Egypt.

Gnostics were “people who knew”, and their knowledge at once constituted them a superior class of beings, whose present and future status was essentially different from that of those who, for whatever reason, did not know.

The doctrines of certain pre-Christian pagan, Jewish, and early Christian sects that valued the revealed knowledge of God and of the origin and end of the human race as a means to attain redemption for the spiritual element in humans and that distinguished the Demiurge from the unknowable Divine Being.

Gnostics were “people who knew “, and their knowledge at once constituted them a superior class of beings, whose present and future status was essentially different from that of those who, for whatever reason, did not know.

Conversion to Islam and the Albigensian Crusade (1209′1229) greatly reduced the remaining number of Gnostics throughout the Middle Ages, though a few isolated communities continue to exist to the present.

Gnostics classified people according to three categories: (1) gnostics, or those certain of salvation, because they were under the influence of the spirit (pneumatikoi); (2) those not fully gnostics, but capable of salvation through knowledge (psychikoi); and (3) those so dominated by matter that they were beyond salvation (hylikoi).

Its population was largely Gnostics and Arian Christians, and were a sanctuary for Jews who were persecuted almost everywhere else in Europe.
He did not create the material universe because it was instead created by an evil or lesser God, sometimes called a “demiurge”.

This century was also a period when Pagan, Jewish and Christian forms of Gnosticism had the most influence on the doctrine and structure of the Christian Church, even though critics treated it a Christian heresy (Crim: 277).

In general, Gnostics taught cosmological dualism, strict asceticism, repudiation of material creation as evil, docetism, and the existence of the divine spark in humans.

Arsenic and Old Lace

One of America's best-loved comedies will kick off a two-week run in Marion Saturday. The McDowell High Titans Theatre presents "Arsenic and Old Lace" by Joseph Kesselring.
Many will remember the classic 1944 film directed by Frank Capra and starring Cary Grant. The play ran on Broadway for four years from 1941 to 1944.
The macabre story revolves around theatre critic and militant bachelor Mortimer Brewster's (Jaime Frye) marriage to beautiful Elaine (Alix Williams), while trying to keep her away from his zany relatives. When he learns just how truly crazy his relatives are, he tries to get them all put away.

Brewster's kindly old maiden aunts, Abby (Mercedes Peterson) and Martha (Kristina Bartlett) take in down and out borders and, if they feel sorry for the old gentlemen, poison them to put them out of their misery.
His delusional younger brother Teddy (Drew Newton) believes he is Theodore Roosevelt. The aunts call their poisoned gentlemen "yellow fever victims" and get Teddy to bury them in "Panama," which is actually the cellar of their Brooklyn home.
To make matters worse for Mortimer, the family is unexpectedly reunited with Mortimer's sadistic homicidal maniac brother, Jonathon (Joshua Hutchins) and his associate, drunken amateur plastic surgeon Doctor Einstein (Jaime Newton), who are hiding from the law and have a corpse of their own to bury in Panama.
Can Mortimer get rid of the visitors? Can he get Teddy and his aunts put away without alerting the cops to the graveyard downstairs?
And can he go through with his marriage, now that it is clear that insanity runs in his family? It'll cost you a mere $5 (or $7 at the door) to find out.
The play is directed by faculty member Greg Hils and student Jessie Emery; technical direction by faculty member Allison Briggs and student Josh Clopton.
Advance tickets are on sale in the high school's media center and can be bought over the phone by calling 652-2440.
Show times are Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, Dec. 18, 19 and 20. Evening shows start at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee is at 2:30.

Armstrong cycle fever hits Down Under

Adelaide has been invaded by a lycra-clad army of cycling enthusiasts, with the capital of South Australia feeling more like 'Planet Lance'.

More than three years after retiring from professional cycling, Lance Armstrong is taking part in the Tour Down Under, his much-anticipated comeback race.

In all, there are 133 riders here from 23 countries, but the focus is solely upon the 37-year-old Texan who retired in 2005 after securing his seventh victory in the Tour de France.

His face seems to be everywhere, from the arrivals hall at the airport to the side of trams gliding through the streets.

Tourism chiefs are promoting the tour as "Your Chance to See Lance".

Adelaide has not seen anything like it since the great Donald Bradman left his native New South Wales and decided to play his cricket for South Australia, and The Australian newspaper described him as a "one-man stimulus for the South Australian economy".

Armstrong won the Tour de France seven times

Rather like a visiting head of state, he received a personal welcome to the city by the premier of South Australia, while the hometown newspaper, the Adelaide Advertiser, has printed a special souvenir picture of him every day this week.

I suppose you could say that Australia's City of Churches is displaying an almost religious-style fervour.

At the pre-race press conference, one journalist asked him if he felt like Jesus Christ.

"I've been called a lot of things in my life," deadpanned Armstrong.

"I don't know if he rode either. He could do a lot of things, apparently, but I don't know if he rode."

Still, this could be the start of the great Armstrong revival, since he has his determined glare fixed on this year's Tour de France.

The man who survived testicular cancer 12 years ago hopes his return to racing will boost cancer awareness - that, he says, is his primary motivation.

But his competitive instincts have clearly been aroused.

Though he does not think he will end up with the winner's jersey in the Tour Down Under - that would be unrealistic, he says - in six months time he may well be a world-beater again.

At the press conference, he said he would have a better sense of his fitness in April and May.

Having trained in Hawaii, Armstrong claims his fitness through November, December and January has been better than it was when he won his last Tour De France.

And this week, on his police-escorted training rides in the Adelaide Hills, he has left his Astana team-mates in their wake.

The pre-race talk is that he will try at least to dominate the Tour Down Under.

"I have been drinking beer and sitting on my ass for three years," he scoffed at that suggestion. "How could they think that?"

Then he struck a more serious note, and his competitive streak came to the fore.

"If the opportunity is there I will certainly take it. I guarantee I will take every opportunity to be at the front of the race and to animate the race and be active. "No doubt. No bluffing and no hiding. If the race dictates that, and I feel good, I promise you I will attack. I just don't know whether I will be in a position to do that."

As for the delicate matter of his age, he jokingly threatened to throw out reporters who were audacious enough to mention that he is three years shy of 40.

He admits to a little stiffness and soreness, but that his recovery rate and power were good.

Armstrong says his fitness is as good as ever

Armstrong also has a specially-designed new bike, which has been emblazoned with two numbers: 27.5, signifying the 27.5 million people who have died of cancer since the 2005 Tour de France; and 1274 - the number of days which have passed since his last professional race.

Even if he were to come fifth in the Tour de France, he said, he would still have deemed his comeback a success if he managed to raise global awareness about cancer.

From a sporting perspective, he admitted there was a risk to his legacy. "I'm willing to take that risk," he said. "From a human perspective and from a cause perspective, I think it's well worth the sporting risk."

The Town Down Under starts on Tuesday, with its six stages taking in the bush, the outback and South Australia's Barossa Valley wine region.

But Armstrong returns to competitive action on Sunday evening in a race called the 50km criterium around a circuit in Adelaide's Rymill Park, where 100,000 spectators are expected.

Fittingly enough, for a man so dedicated to his cause, it is called the Cancer Council Classic.

Putin and Tymoshenko to talk into night to solve gas

The Prime Ministers of Russia and the Ukraine Vladimir Putin and Yulia Tymoshenko reached Sunday an agreement on the gas pricing dispute between their states, which is expected to lead to restoration of Russian gas supplies for Europe as early as Monday.

Putin and Tymoshenko agreed at a meeting in Moscow that the Ukraine would start buying Russian gas at market prices just like other European states but with a 20% discount in 2009, the Bulgarian news agency BGNES reported.

In exchange, the Ukrainian side has agreed to keep the current preferential transit fees for Russian gas until the end of 2009.

Under the old contract, the Ukraine was getting Russian natural gas at USD 179,5 per 1 000 cubic meters, whereas the rest of Europe pays USD 350.

The two Prime Ministers have asked the respective gas monopolies, Gazprom and Naftogaz, to prepare a draft for the framework agreement, which is expected to be signed Monday.

The Ukrainian PM Yulia Tymoshenko said in a joint press conference with Vladimir Putin after the end of the five-hour talks that the Russia gas supplies for Europe via the Ukraine might be resumed on Monday, as soon as the agreement was signed.

The only question mark left after Sunday's agreement between Putin and Tymoshenko is whether the Ukrainian President Viktov Yushchenko will confirm the deal with Moscow. In 2008 Yushchenko vetoed a similar framework agreement on the Russian gas supplies.

Paul Vincent

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, John said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?”
They said to him, “Rabbi”-which means Teacher-“where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.

Reflection:

We cannot truly be disciples of Christ unless we, too, wait to hear God’s call and respond by transforming our lives, evidenced in the simple willingness to be obedient to God’s will. This means more than keeping commandments, it means that our whole lives are directed to waiting and listening for God’s self-revelation. Sometimes this revelation comes through others-perhaps in their cry for help. Sometimes the revelation comes through prayer in which we take some time to listen to God. However the revelation or call comes, if we respond we will be transformed. And Jesus will turn and ask us, “What are you looking for?”(Living Liturgy, p.42)

Vincentian Meditation:

As a reflection of the whole family of God, Members, who are known as Vincentians, are drawn from every ethnic and cultural background, age group, and economic level. Vincentians are united in an international society of charity by their spirit of poverty, humility and sharing, which is nourished by prayer and reflection, mutually supportive gatherings and adherence to a basic Rule. (US Manual of the SSVDP, p.1)

Discussion: (Share your thoughts after a moment of silence)

“What were you looking for” when you joined the Society?

Closing Prayer:

Jesus, you turned and asked the disciples, “What are you looking for?”
-We heard your call to be a disciple and we followed you.
We thank you for the call to be a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
-May our Conference be a reflection of the whole family of God.
You call us to be united in a spirit of poverty, humility and sharing,
-May we be nourished by prayer and reflection.
You call us to mutually supportive gatherings,
-May we share a deep sense of friendship.
You call us to adherence to our basic Rule,
-May we be faithful to the spirit of St. Vincent de
Paul and Blessed Frederic Ozanam.
Amen

The Roasted Bird on Cheese Grits

Last month, I met Therese (A Food Journey in Korea) and Rob (Homebrew Korea) in Ansan Asia Town for a little international food and booze tour. It was chilly, but we had a great time. Before we parted ways, we explored the wonderful international grocery stores for exotic items. I hit the motherlode–real lemongrass, galangal, various chutneys, okra, frozen chapati–and these guys.

Gruesome, huh?

Therese and I looked at these packages of tiny, tiny birds, trying to figure out what they were. She guessed they were quail and rapped rhapsodic about quail with maple glaze. I’ve dealt with whole animals before, usually seafood. In the past, I have killed and dressed a turkey and helped break down a whole hog. So I figured I could trim these little guys and do something gourmet.

I mean, come on–quail is that fancy stuff you only get in fancy restaurants. And at 5,000 (INR₨179.50) won for a pack of six–it was a great bargain.
A couple of weeks ago, I decided to try them out. They were so cute that it was difficult for me to snip off their heads and feet and clean them. And they really needed cleaning. The insides still had a good many guts, and they still had a few feathers to pluck off.

Heh, heh… I said, “Pluck off.”

A heavy pair of kitchen scissors made it a much easier task than if I had tried it with a knife. I put my little trash bucket in the sink to hold all the various body parts and organs that I trimmed off them.
I thought I’d give them a nice glaze. They’re gamey birds, and they need something bright and citrusy to counter that. My brother, Chef Ben, gave me a big Christmas sack of smoked Spanish paprika from his restaurant (Eclipse di Luna). For Christmas dinner, I mixed it with some Korean Yuja Cha 유자차, which is an orange and honey tea that comes in a jar and looks like orange marmalade. It was AMAZING on a roasted chicken. I thought it would be perfect for the quail.
After trimming, they didn’t look so scary. They’re all lined up like they’re going to do a Korean pop line dance routine–like the Wonder Girls–though I think these birds are a bit older than their members (and possibly more talented). I butterflied them on a foil covered baking sheet and rubbed them thoroughly with salt and pepper.
