Things that go bling at tennis final

Star spotters were feasting their eyes on the celebrity crowd during the men's singles final between Roger Federer and Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

Australian Hollywood star Eric Bana was almost courtside as he and glamorous wife Rebecca chatted before the match.

Dark glasses did nothing to hide the handsome Incredible Hulk and Chopper actor as he tried to look inconspicuous.

Dannii Minogue and her hunky English boyfriend Kris Smith could barely keep their hands off each other as they paraded around the Rod Laver Arena.

The smitten Australia's Got Talent judge was beaming as she hammed it up for the cameras.

Focusing on the tennis, Carlton captain Chris Judd looked relaxed after a week in Malaysia with his Blues teammates on former president Richard Pratt's luxurious jet.

He and girlfriend - WAG royalty Rebecca Twigley - gazed adoringly at one another throughout the match.

Swim champ Leisel Jones took some time away from the pool to lap up the atmosphere before the match. Jones was radiant in a black miniskirt and swept-up hair as she fanned herself in the heat.

And, never one to miss a good battle, underworld figure Mick Gatto made sure he was seen.

He and some cronies showed off heavy tatts and gold bling as they muscled into the crowds.

Victoria Police was pleased with crowd behaviour throughout the tournament.

Olympic star Phelps in hot water over pot-smoking picture

HISTORY'S greatest Olympian, American swimmer Michael Phelps, is embroiled in a drugs scandal after a photograph that appeared to show him inhaling from a bong was published internationally.

The glass pipe is generally used to smoke cannabis.

London tabloid The News of the World obtained the photograph, which it said was taken at a party at the University of South Carolina on November 6.

The paper claimed Phelps went to the party with a girlfriend, who is a student there.

Phelps won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics last August and took an extended break after the Games to celebrate his success.

The initial newspaper report suggested evidence of cannabis use threatened Phelps's career as an athlete.

But Phelps wouldn't be banned as a drug cheat even if he were using cannabis in the image.

Cannabis is only a banned drug if an athlete tests positive in competition, and Phelps was not competing at the time.

However, the threat to his image and sponsorship earnings could be substantial.

USA Swimming could also penalise him for bringing his sport into disrepute.

Just last week, Phelps was declared the US Olympic Committee's male athlete of the year.

The News of the World claimed Phelps's management company, Octagon, offered it "a raft of extraordinary incentives not to run the bong picture".

"Spokesman Clifford Bloxham offered us an extraordinary deal not to publish our story, saying Phelps would become our columnist for three years, host events and get his sponsors to advertise with us," the paper said.

"In return, he asked that we kill the Phelps bong picture."

It is estimated Phelps is earning $US10 million a year in the wake of his Beijing heroics, but some conservative sponsors may reconsider being associated with him.

This latest indiscretion happened almost four years to the day since Phelps was arrested for drink-driving in November 2004, after he had won six gold medals at the Athens Olympics.

He made a public apology for his behaviour at the time, was given 18 months' probation and participated in a program to warn teenagers of the perils of under-age drinking.

The drinking age in his home state, Maryland, is 21.

Phelps reportedly kissed Australia's triple gold medallist Stephanie Rice at a party at the Beijing Games.

He was photographed last September with his hand on the bare bottom of a stripper at the Playboy Club in Las Vegas.

Phelps has not responded to the latest allegation.

Phelps finally returned to training in Baltimore a week ago to prepare for the world championships in Rome in July.

Shimon Peres at Davos

Charles posted about this video of the Davos panel where Shimon Peres confronted the Turkish Prime Minister on why Israel went into Gaza. Peres comes in at about 39:30, but it’s well worth starting around the half hour mark or earlier to listen to the lies of Amr Moussa and the propaganda of Erdogan.

Peres speaks from the heart, and from experience. He tried to negotiate peace with the Palestinians decades ago and was reviled for it. Now, he defends his nation against the trumped-up charges of the world that ignores the thousands of rockets. Listen carefully to Peres’ stats: He points out that over a thousand Israelis have been killed by terror in the last eight years, a story that the world ignores when they play up recent Palestinian casualties and play down recent Israeli deaths—because the security fence stopped Hamas’ ability to blow up Israelis in restaurants, buses, and shopping centers.

Extra points for Peres for quoting the Hamas charter. I highly recommend you take the time to watch, and learn.

Letterman Shows Unaired Bill Hicks Stand-Up Act (WATCH)

Bill Hicks, a comedian who described himself as "Chomsky with dick jokes," finally got his shot at the Late Show 15 years after his death. The routine was supposed to air on October 1, 1993, but David Letterman had it cut.

Letterman nixed the piece because of content concerns ("let's hunt and kill Billy Ray Cyrus," Hicks says) which cause the cancer-ridden comic to write a 39-page angry letter to the New Yorker about the decision.

Letterman was extremely apologetic on Friday night, airing the act in its entirety. "Let me again apologize for the heartache and sadness my decision caused your family," Letterman told Mary Hicks, the comedian's mother, whom he invited on the show to introduce the clip.

Obama Appointee Daschle has Geithner TaxProblem, Pays 3 Years Back Taxes

Looks like another Obama cabinet appointee has a tax problem.

Tom Daschle, ex-Senate Majority leader and Obama’s choice for Health and Human Services Secretary, just paid the IRS $140,000 in back taxes.

Business Week reports that Daschle owed back taxes for 2005, 2006, and 2007 based on audit adjustments made by the IRS for his free use of a car and driver.

The White House said that InterMedia Advisors, a private equity firm, had provided Daschle, its chairman of the board, with the transportation.

Daschle, Business Week says, has been a mentor to Obama and was initially considered for Obama’s chief of staff.

So, let me see now:

That makes Obama choices Bill Richardson, Tim Geithner and now Tom Daschle all tainted by their own financial problems.

And this after Obama has repeatedly said that turning around the economy is job number one.

Oh, and don’t forget that Obama’s campaign finance secretary, Marty Nesbitt, had several outstanding tax liens against him.

Incidentally, like Geithner, it seems that Daschle only clamored to clear up his tax problem after it became evident that it might hurt his chances of Senate confirmation.

Author’s Query: What do you suppose people would have said had George Bush done such a poor job of vetting his cabinet picks? And didn’t John McCain get pilloried unmercifully by the left wing for picking the “unvetted” Sarah Palin to be his running mate?

Karma. Ya gotta love it.

Michael Steele the new RNC Chairman

Michael Steel has become the first African-American Republican National Committee Chairman! This is exciting news. Steele has quite a fascinating history, and even spent three years as a Catholic seminarian (from this site)! Whether Steele will help the battered GOP, I don’t know, but I am happy that the RNC has an African-American chairman. Whatever your opinion on Obama and Steele, we are living in historic times with regards to race relations!

Super Bowl forecast: Mild temps, boring game

I don’t know. I just can’t get worked up over this Super Bowl thing.

Can’t get into all the hype.

I mean, the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Arizona Cardinals?

Sounds almost as entertaining as the opera.

(Admittedly, I’m rooting for the Cardinals, as noted in Friday’s blog. But that’s only because I hate the Steelers; I’m from Cleveland, after all.)

Can’t get too worked up over Bruce Springsteen, who’s to perform at halftime. To me his music is about as appealing as nails scratching a chalkboard.

And can you believe NBC plans more than five hours of pre-game coverage? Is there actually someone out there who will watch all that?

(Well, someone who has an awful lot of time on his hands might do so.)

Nevertheless, because the game is a big deal to a lot of sports fans, here's an updated weather forecast for Tampa Bay on Sunday evening:

Mostly clear skies, calm winds and mild temperatures in the low 60s, dropping into the mid 50s by game's end.

(South Florida's forecast for Sunday: Morning lows in the mid 40s, afternoon highs in the upper 60s and evening temps in the mid 50s. There also is a 20 percent chance of rain.)

Oh, by the way, I fully intend to watch the game – I can’t wait to see all those cool Super Bowl commercials!

Paper Roses (a la Marie Osmond)

One of the things I really enjoy is walking out into the back yard or the front yard with my secateurs and cutting long-stemmed roses to fill our many vases at Casa Authorblog. I guess another thing that makes it very special is the fact that everything in our garden was planted by us when we built this home.

I planned the garden before the house was built. I sketched each garden bed and each prospective plant on the architectural scale drawings. I sketched where the garden gate would be, I sketched the curve of the pathway, I sketched the irregular garden bed that would follow the contours and angles of the long driveway and the walls.

So, yes, this garden is very close to my heart.

And because we are in mid-summer here, the fearsome heat last week literally fried every rose that was blooming. It looked - as it always does on those fry-an-egg-on-the-pavement days of the Australian summer - as if someone had taken an oxy-acetylene flame to every bloom on every bush.

So the youngest Authorbloglet made amends with these paper roses.

Is Google Safe Browsing Really Safe?

Google Safe Browsing is a Google search engine feature. Google Safe Browsing warns users of a possible malware attack if bad websites have been identified as phishing sites. At one time, Google Chrome identified Facebook as a phishing site. This was brought about by Facebook Virus/Kooface Virus. Google safe browsing is not fool-proof. Recently, users have seen a warning “Warning Visiting This Web Site May Harm Your Computer!” and according to some, this is a Google malware.

With recent events involving a possible Google malware attack on the most popular search engine, people now question if Google safe browsing is still reliable. How can people determine what sites are safe and what site are not? Google is obviously broken down at this time. All search results are tagged unsafe for browsing. How can this be? Even personal blogs with no other content but daily activities are branded as phishing web sites. Is Google safe browsing really safe? Only Google can answer this and the team has a lot to explain to users and webmasters alike.

Hudson River Landing Game Sweeps The Internet

Flash games have been popular on the Internet for years, but rarely do you see them take on a serious subject like the Hudson river landing of flight 1549.

Every one was amazed by the landing of the A320 in the Hudson river back on January 15th, and just slightly over 2 weeks later, there is a Flash based game that will let you try your hand at landing the plane yourself. You start your descent at around 1500 feet, and using just the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard, you attempt to keep the plane level for the inevitable splash down in the river.

As games go, it is mediocre at best, I mean I successfully landed the plane on the first try, and even I thought my angle was a bit off. When I intentionally brought the plane in at a severe angle, I did indeed “lose”, but the animation still showed people piling out on to the wings with the plane sitting at a 180 degree angle in the water, with the nose straight up in the air. It’s amusing to play once, but it’s nothing you’re going to get addicted to.

We’ve embedded it below for your convenience if you’d like to give it a try and see if you can perform your own Miracle on the Hudson. Click “Read More” to go to the game.

Piper PA-34 crashed less than two miles from the Tri-State Airport near the Ohio and Kentucky state lines near Kenova, WV airport - 31 January 09

A small plane apparently low on fuel hit a power line and crashed into a wooded area near a West Virginia airport, killing all six people aboard, authorities said. Shortly before the crash Friday, the pilot radioed the nearby airport, warning that the plane was running out of fuel. Witnesses said the aircraft was flying low, then the electricity went out. "The pilot issued a mayday," said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters. "The mayday was based on low fuel." Officials initially said three people had died in the crash, but later revised the death toll to six. The Piper PA-34 crashed less than two miles from the Tri-State Airport near the Ohio and Kentucky state lines. Peters said Tri-State controllers were working with the pilot when the plane made a sudden 180-degree turn and they lost contact. FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac didn't know where the plane had taken off from or where it was headed. Witness Chris Smith was outside with his daughter when he saw the plane go down. Appalachian Power confirmed the plane hit a transmission line, but spokesman Phil Moye said power to the area was only briefly affected. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

Janine Sligar Found Guilty Of Sexually Abusing A Prison Inmate

Janine Sligar, a 47 year old former prison secretary, was sentenced to six months in prison on Thursday for having maintained a sexual relationship with an inmate under her supervision.

Sligar pleaded guilty on Friday of having had sex with an inmate named Eric McClain between 10 and 20 times while inside of the prison. Sligar first came into contact with McClain when he was ordered to clean her office and the two eventually hit it off. "They began to have conversations and realized they had similar interests," said the plea agreement. The relationship reportedly took place over various months in the summer of 2007.

According to CNN, the agreement indicated that the encounters took place primarily in a staff restroom in the housing unit at the Federal Prison Camp in Florence, Colorado.

Authorities were tipped off to the relationship and after a search of Sligar’s home discovered a journal which detailed the affair as well as explicit photographs of the encounters themselves.

Sligar admitted in court that she provided McClain with a variety of contraband including: a cell phone with a non local number so that McClain could call her and photographs with explicit sexual poses. Further investigation revealed that the defendant had changed the primary beneficiary of her insurance policy from her children to McClain.

According to the plea agreement sex between inmates and prison employees is "a huge security threat that compromises the institution and other correctional officers."

A resident of Wray Colorado, Sligar is a 14 year veteran of the Bureau of Prisons. She was found guilty of sexual abuse and will serve five years of supervised release as well as be obligated to register as a sex offender, according to a statement provided by the U.S. Attorneys office in the District of Colorado.

Meet Creator of 'Hero On The Hudson' Game

So it took some digging, but if you can believe it, I tracked down the team who invented the free game "Hero on the Hudson" and it turns out the company is quite the prolific games developer. Not to mention how successful this particular title has become. You won't believe it.

The CEO is Andriy Sharanevych and his Orb Games Ltd. is headquartered in Kiev, Ukraine. He started the company back in 2006, with a team of games developers who sport a terrific pedigree. His engineers have worked on "Chasm the Rift," "Duke Nukem Endangered Species;" "Vivisector: Beast Inside;" "Moto GP 3: Ultimate Racing Technology;" "Chaos League;" "StarWars Galaxies;" and many others.

Your Chance to Be the Hero on the Hudson
On the company's website (www.orb-games.com), he says his mission is to "develop innovative games based upon our own concepts as well as upon other unique and interesting mass-market product lines in mind." The focus of the company today is on casual, downloadable, online, PC and home consoles, as well as handheld devices, and that the company is authorized to develop for Nintendo DS, Sony Playstation and Sony's PSP. (Sorry Microsoft Xbox fans.)

Here is my email interview with Andriy:

JG: When did you create "Hudson"?

Andriy Sheranevych: We’ve created this game about 10 days ago, only few days after Chesley Sullenberger safely landed the damaged plane in the Hudson River, saving all the passengers and the crew. Initially, the game was released at our portal TastyPlay.com and at Addicting Games, who also sponsored the game. From there it was taken to many, many other game portals, blogs, etc. and became popular.

JG: What gave you the idea to base a game around this incredible event?

AS: The event itself was absolutely shocking for the whole world...But shocking in a good way. We were watching a miracle - where each single component of circumstances matched another so well, and at the head of it a masterful performance of pilot Chesley Sullenberger. We just wanted people to understand and not to forget that this is not for granted, so we tried to make a game that would remind everyone about this miraculous event.

JG: What kind of technology did you use to create it? Was it easy?

AS: We used Flash to create this game. The biggest issue was the really tight development timeframe – only 2 days to make and release the game! We knew the game is going to be viral and we had to make very quickly, as it's all about the timing. So that was tricky. And I'm glad we’ve made it.

JG: What's been the feedback?

AS: Good question. There’s a lot of controversy in comments that we get. We realize that some people think it was heartless to create such a game. But our thought is different. I’d like to accent that with "Hero on the Hudson" we wanted to create a game that is very positive in its nature, that gives you hope. And in fact, we deliberately made it very simple to make a successful landing in the game, as this is the game about the miracle and not a tragedy. You can play a role of a pilot, who will save hundreds of lives behind him and bring joy, happiness and hope to millions of people.

JG: Any idea how many hits you've gotten? Seems like the game is getting a lot of attention here!

AS: We’ve got over 1.5 million gameplays during the first week and the game is still very hot. Today it’s on the news all over the place (people say they even saw it on TV), so I guess we’re going to see another boost of popularity.

JG: Any plans for a mobile version, maybe something for iPhone?

AS: Yeah, everyone is crazy about iPhone development these days. No comments.

Think of the game as almost a "loss-leader" for Orb. Tastyplay is a free website, advertising driven, and some of these games from Orb itself show just what this company can do, in a very short period of time. (Two days?!) And this one is getting them noticed in a big, BIG way.

So there you have it. Good ol' fashioned ingenuity, capitalizing on current events. Geez, sounds almost, well, American, doesn't it!

Warning Visiting This Web Site May Harm Your Computer!

"Warning Visiting This Web Site May Harm Your Computer!” Yeah, this is what Google search results indicate today. All search results on all search terms, Google tells the “Warning Visiting This Web Site May Harm Your Computer!” Are you kidding me? Is this a Google Malware? Is Google broken down?

I was honestly shocked when Google, the top search engine gives results warning me that my own sites allegedly have malwares. There is also an option where the user is recommended to report a site at stopbadware.org (which is unfair to legit sites receiving the message “Warning Visiting This Web Site May Harm Your Computer!”). This alleged Google malware is really annoying and bothering some publishers. Imagine if your site is tageed with the warning message “Warning Visiting This Web Site May Harm Your Computer!” eveytime a user finds your site in Google search results. what a joke from Google.

Legal Sports Gambling at CentSports.com (Cool)

CentSports.com was mentioned in one of the email newsletters I received this morning and I have to admit, I am a little pissed that I didn't think of this idea myself. There is almost no way that this site won't be successful if they promote it properly. I almost deleted the email too because I was just trying to clean out my Inbox but luckily I took the time to scan it quickly. Once I saw "free sports gambling", they had my full attention.

I joined one of the online gambling sites a few months back and after winning about $100, I soon realized that a) short money does not last long in gambling and b) losing real money sucks donkey balls. I quickly lost that $100 plus the original $100 I put in and I was back to zero. It was fun while it lasted. I will not be back to that site any time soon. ESPN's Streak for Cash is pretty cool because you have the chance to win $1 Million but you also have to be in the zone and win 27 bets in a row. If you do get on a streak, you are wasting all of those good "bets" that you will never get paid out on. That blows!

CentSports.com actually seems like a nice and legal alternative. It turns out that paying out winnings on a sport gambling is legal in the U.S. if the players aren't actually paying to play. The way it works is that the site pays you for watching ads. Pretty simple. They also show you an ad when you sign up so you earn $.10 right off the bat which can be used for your first bet. It sounds like nothing but it can add up quickly if you win a few bets and watch some more ads. They also offer you the ability to put a multiplier on your bet if you watch another ad right after the bet is placed. It's a pretty painless process and you are a hell of a lot more likely watch and even pay attention to an ad if you know you are "making money" from it. The site seems pretty legit and they have already had someone win a cash out of $1,000. That's free money right there, homey! You can't beat that.

I just signed up a few minutes ago and already placed my first bet. Even if I lose, they will always allow me to earn $.10 by watching a new ad, so my account will never be at zero. That sounds like a great way to feed an addiction and keep you in the game! You can also link up with and keep track of your friends bets so there is a fun social aspect to it all too. You can copy the bets of your friend that's on a roll or you can gang up and rip on the clown that just lost 10 bets in a row. That sounds like good times all around.

Sports are always a lot more fun when you gamble on it (see the NFL), so I highly recommend you check it out and at least give it a chance. It may take a little time and effort to "earn" your money but I think you'll have some fun doing it and won't have to worry about getting your knees smashed by some mafia dude trying to collect your debts. It sounds like a win/win situation, in my opinion. Get after it!

If you are in a giving mood, please click on this link here so I can get credited for signing you up. Once you do, I recommend doing the same yourself and promote this site to your friends so you can earn some extra cash in your account too. I'm assuming the more people that join, the better the advertising payouts should be in the future. That means more money for you to use with your bets. Holla!
