HOMEMADE 12-CELL Eee BATTERY

little project seeing the fire risks and hazzards it posses. But it is pretty neat if not ugly by any standard. Anyways TenaciousDre decided to put Asus Eee PC 10-cell battery to shame by making his own 12-cell unit.
He completed the feat by shrink-wrapping a four cell laptop battery with another eight batteries from other laptops to produce the 12-cell version you see above.
While not a design masterpiece (in terms of looks) it still gets the job done and doesn't look much better than the "hammerhead edition" currently on the Eee 901.

Lux Interior, CRAMPS founder, has died.

Feb 4th is a dark day. The lead singer of the Cramps, Lux Interior, has passed away at age 60. In the liner notes of the Cramps' "Gravest Hits" record, he was described as "the psycho-sexual Elvis/Werewolf hybrid from hell." He is survived by his wife and longtime collaborator, the beautiful and deadly Miss Poison Ivy.

Above, here he is with the band in their early days, performing a free concert in 1978 for patients at the Napa State Mental Hospital. It is perhaps not the best quality recording of their work, and not even their best performance, but it's the kind of reckless, free-floating awesome they were. (Thanks, Derek Bledsoe)

Eight O'Clock Coffee Gets The Makeover You Pick!

Little known fact: Eight O'Clock Coffee, which used to be an A&P brand and now has broader though still somewhat limited distribution, is celebrating its 150th anniversary by doing a packaging makeover. And they are asking consumers to vote on which package design is better.

They're using the ePrize platform to manage the contest.

Coffeephiles should know that Eight O'Clock is consistently rated the best or one of the best coffees in America, and at a pricepoint considerably lower than the Illy or Starbucks you may use.

Drink for thought. Arr arr. And if you don't pick the bag on the left, you're a nutter.

Go Get Your Halo Wars Demo

It's a Halo game without Bungie! It's a real-time strategy game on a console! Halo Wars is all kinds of unexpected. So with a demo now out, feel to try before you buy/vomit opinions.

It's well over 1GB, and while at time of writing there were still a few kinks in downloading it (namely, despite Microsoft saying it was there, and some people being able to grab it, I couldn't actually download it), by the time you read this it should hopefully be all plain sailing.

Sheyla Hershey Gets KKK Breasts

Sheyla Hershey wanted to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records so she decided that having the biggest breasts were the way to do it. So last year, Sheyla Hershey had FFF breasts implanted into her body in Texas.

But Sheyla Hershey decided that FFF just wasn't big enough and wanted even bigger breasts. Problem was that Texas, who used to say that everything's bigger in Texas, suddenly decided that it just wasn't legal to inject more silicone into Sheyla Hershey's body. Boo freakin' hoo.

So Sheyla Hershey did her homework and discovered that no such law exists in Brazil, so off she went and had KKK breast implants put into her body. And yes, I know what you're thinking... How racist.

Killzone 2 demo hitting Euro PSN on Feb. 5

It looks like players won't have to wait until after Killzone 2 rolls onto store shelves to get their first taste of combat. A Sony Europe rep has revealed that a demo for the anticipated shooter will be available on the European PSN on February 5. It will be available on the US PSN at the same time, but only to those partaking in GameStop's pre-order deal. It appears the uncommitted will have to wait for a general PSN release on Feb. 26 -- or attempt subversion via a European account.

"I can confirm that this will be live on the PSN store on Thursday 5th February (same day as SCEA) across all SCEE PSN locales," wrote Sony Computer Entertainment UK Limited's Hugo Bustillos in an email. According to Bustillos, the demo will consist of the first two areas of 'Corinth River,' the game's first level, described as 'beach landing' and 'warehouse.' A tutorial will be included as well, ensuring that all ISA greenhorns will be up to speed when the full game arrives for the PS3 on February 27.

Bernie Madoff screwed Sandy Koufax

ESPN:

Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax, a high school baseball teammate and friend of Mets owner Fred Wilpon, was among the clients who lost money investing with Bernard Madoff, according to a court filing released Wednesday night.

More than two dozen accounts involving the Mets, their owners and companies affiliated with their owners were listed, many with addresses at Shea Stadium. Koufax was the only immediately recognizable big-name player on the list.

Koufax attended Lafayette High School along with Wilpon in the 1950s and the two remain close. Koufax usually shows up each year at the Mets' spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Among the entities that had accounts with Madoff were Sterling Mets, the Mets Limited Partnership, the New York Mets Foundation and Sterling Doubleday -- the entity that owned the team when Wilpon and Nelson Doubleday were partners.

No amounts were listed in the filing, made in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan.[...]

The Mets have not said how much the entities and individuals have lost. Jeff Wilpon said in December the money can be replenished over time as the operating businesses generate profits.

"The individual partners lost some money at Madoff. It doesn't affect the Mets. It doesn't affect the Citi Field project. It doesn't affect SNY or any of our other operating businesses," Jeff Wilpon said.

Sara Kuszak: Sara Kuszak killed (photos)

Sara Kuszak, a pregnant American tourist in Ceiba, eastern Puerto Rico, was killed on Wednesday February 4. Kuszak was abducted and stuffed into the trunk of a car. Kuszak used her cell phone to call for help. Kuszak was killed about 1 hour after her call.

Kuszak was 5 months pregnant. She arrived in Puerto Rico to see her fiancé, Cheshire McIntosh. Police found Kuszak dead in a field. Police found a suspect and arrested the local man. His shirt was soaked with blood. However, the suspect said he had attended to an injured horse. Police need to test the blood to determine if it was animal or human blood. Also, the blood needs to be matched against the DNA of Ms Kuszak.

Kuszak was abducted during her morning jog. Even when she was bundled into the car, Kuszak called an employee working at a marina and described her attacker’s car. The lady employee called police to relay the message. It was a bit too late to save Sara Kuszak.

Michael Graves coffee maker

You may have noticed that Michael Graves has some designer goods at Target. I stopped in for only the second time to look for and pickup a new coffee maker as ours decided to quit.

His coffee maker was in the mid-price range and seemed to have some good features to make it worthwhile. It is manufactured by Hamilton Beach.

The water container comes out and makes it easy to load.
He still uses paper coffee filters so it is not very green on that front. And speaking of green, did you notice the blue oval! It is bright enough to light up the entire kitchen in the dark. You could use the coffee maker for the dual purpose of coffee and night light, that might qualify for a little green savings

Actors, baseball legends on Madoff client list

NEW YORK — Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax. Actor Kevin Bacon. World Trade Center developer Larry Silverstein.

All three have at least one thing in common: Their names appear on a list of several thousand clients who lost money investing with Bernard Madoff that have been made public in a court filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan.

The list emerged late Wednesday, shortly after a whistleblower in the case, Harry Markopolos, told House lawmakers at a hearing that he had discovered that additional funds had relayed investments to Madoff in Europe — and that the managers of these "feeder" funds may have ignored signs of the massive fraud scheme.

He plans to present his findings to the Securities and Exchange Commission's inspector general Thursday. If proven, they would substantiate the assertions of many analysts that the alleged fraud was far too large for Madoff to have conducted alone.

House lawmakers on Wednesday also sparred with SEC officials, accusing them of impeding their probe into how the agency failed to uncover the alleged fraud.

Prosecutors say Madoff admits he lost more than $50 billion belonging to investors. Defense lawyers say he has cooperated with authorities to help identify assets.

The list of client names, including those of Madoff's relatives, numerous celebrities, dead people and charitable institutions, are listed on a 162-page document. Each page carries 84 single-spaced lines. Some customers are listed
Madoff Client List

multiple times, presumably because they had multiple accounts.
The customers include prominent people and institutions that already had been publicly revealed, such as the Wilpon family, owner of the New York Mets.

Also listed were more than two dozen accounts involving the Mets and companies affiliated with their owners were listed, many with addresses at Shea Stadium.

The amount each person or institution invested with Madoff isn't listed.

One client is Ira Sorkin, the attorney who's defending Madoff against charges he perpetrated the biggest financial fraud in history. Others include Madoff's wife, sons, brother and other relatives.

The list was compiled by AlixPartners LLP, a Dallas company hired as claims agent by the trustee overseeing the liquidation of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.

Madoff hasn't been indicted. He's being held under house arrest at his multimillion-dollar penthouse.

David Beckham's Lawyers In Talks With LA Galaxy Over Extending His Stay At Milan

According to ACMilan.com Adriano Galliani the Milan manager has confirmed that Beckham's lawyers are talking with the LA Galaxy. This is what he had to say:

"Beckham's lawyers are talking with Los Angeles Galaxy who are the legitimate owners of his contract. If they are available to face a negotiation, we shall be very happy to do so. Right now there is neither optimism nor pessimism. The player is of Galaxy, we hope that they decide to sell him, but if they don't change idea, the player is theirs. We will try to purchase him or obtain him on loan until the end of the season or sign him, otherwise we will all be sorry, starting from me, because Beckham will have to leave. The players can make their choices, but the clubs can say no to their wishes. Los Angeles Galaxy have always been nice to us and behaved in a very good manner. In any case right now there is no negotiation and there is no offer. There are Beckham's lawyers who are talking to Los Angeles. To start and close an eventual negotiation there is still time until March 8."

I knew this was coming. David has been doing so well. I hope this goes the way I hope.

The pictures are of David arriving at Glasgow Airport, ahead of tonight's friendly match against Rangers.

Bill Gates unleashes mosquito swarm on TED Conference attendees

According to several conference attendees, Bill Gates unleashed a swarm of mosquitoes upon TED conference attendees, announcing “not only poor people should experience this.”

The stunt was clearly designed to make a vivid point about the continuing battle against malaria in developing nations, as Mr. Gates was at TED to discuss his work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Foundation has spent millions on fighting malaria in poor nations.

No word yet on the legality of his actions. One has to imagine that some sort of health code violation took place. We’ll keep on eye on the story as it develops.

The Little Prince: Lost Season 5, Episode 4 Recap

While not on the same level as last week’s instant classic, Jughead, this week’s episode of Lost provided enough gotta-text-my-friend WTF moments to satisfy fans. What did we learn tonight, kids? A couple of big things, including who is threatening Kate with lawyers and paternity tests and the much-debated fate of a certain castaway.

The Little Prince begins on Penny’s boat, a couple of days after the rescue of the Oceanic Six. It is night, and Kate and Jack are out on deck, debating what to do about Aaron. Kate tells Jack that Claire was going to put the baby up for adoption – that’s why she was heading to Los Angeles – and she’ll be damned if they let that happen.

“We can’t lose him, too,” she says, trying to convince Jack to let them say Aaron is her son.

Jack tells her he’s going to get everyone to lie; which we know everyone – even a stubborn Hurley – would agree to the next day.

Flash forward to three years later; Kate is leaving Aaron in the care of Sun while she goes off to talk to the lawyer who’s been hounding her. When she leaves, a delivery man shows up with a large pizza, with a double order of guns. Also: pictures that show Jack and Ben together. And by “double order of guns” I meant there was a box of chocolates, and underneath the first layer there was a gun. So, yeah…

Jumping to everyone’s favourite time-travellers, we pick up where Jughead left off: Charlotte is out cold and bleeding from the nose. Juliet seems convinced Faraday knows what is going on, as does Sawyer. Faraday tells Juliet it’s like “really bad jet lag” but he doesn’t know why it’s happening.

Kate is meeting with the shady lawyer, Dan Norton, trying to cut a deal. She says she’ll give a blood sample if he lets her talk to the client. The lawyer doesn’t think that’s going to happen, and tells her she’s in no position to bargain. There’s going to be an exchange of custody, he tells Kate.

“You did this to yourself,” he says. “You are going to lose the boy!”

Okay, he didn’t say it with an exclamation mark, but you get the point.

Back on the island, Locke has decided they need to get back to the Orchid station, where all this time travel business began. Locke also says he needs to get off the island and bring back the others, as the time traveling only started after the left. Sawyer tells him everyone on the chopper and boat are dead.

“Don’t you want her to come back?” he asks Sawyer.

We cut to Sayid laid up in the hospital bed. Jack tells him he’s been out for 42 hours. Hurley calls Jack from prison, where he seems quite happy to be. While Jack is out of the room, an assassin dressed as a nurse tries to take out Sayid, who uses his own assassin skills to outwit the would-be killer. They find Kate’s address in his pocket. Jack goes off to save Kate, while Ben (who’d shown up at the hospital) and Sayid head off together, even though Sayid doesn’t really trust Ben any more. The three agree to rendezvous at the marina.

On the island, Sawyer is quizzing Locke about what he’ll tell Kate to make her want to come back. A beam in the night sky – which looks like the light that came from the hatch at the end of season on – catches their attention. Locke wants to avoid the light at all costs. As they continue to walk through the jungle, Miles notices his nose is bleeding. The group hears screaming, and Sawyer rushes off to find out what’s happening. In one of the best scenes of the young season, he stumbles across Claire giving birth to Aaron; you’ll recall Kate acted as a midwife for the delivery. He’s stunned, and says nothing, until a flash takes them to another time.

We cut to Kate waiting in her car outside the lawyer’s office. Jack arrives. She tells him about the lawyer, Mr. Norton, and how someone is trying to take Aaron away. When she spots his car leaving the parking lot, they trail him.

On the island, Locke asks Sawyer what he saw; Sawyer doesn’t want to say. Locke says it is the night that Boone died, and that light was from the hatch. Sawyer wonders why Locke didn’t want to tell his younger self what happens, so they can avoid the mess they’re in. Miles tells Faraday about his nose bleed, but doesn’t want to tell the others. Faraday tells him he thinks the nose bleeds are related to time spent on the island. Miles doesn’t buy it, as he’s only been on the island two weeks, while Sawyer and Locke have been there for months.

“Are you sure about that?” asks Faraday.

They get to the oceanside only to find their campsite in shambles, the zodiac gone – they were going to use it to reach the Orchid – and two new boats – catamarans? – on the beach. They find a water bottle for an Indian airline in one of them.

“Who came in these, other Others?” asks Sawyer.

They take one of the boats. While paddling to the Orchid, Sawyer tells Juliet what he saw before being interrupted by gunfire – the owners of the boat are following in the other boat. Luckily, a time-flash saves them.

Kate and Jack follow the lawyer to a motel, where they find out he’s meeting with Claire’s mom, of all people. Jack convinces Kate to let him talk to the mom.

“She’ll listen to me,” he says. “Aaron is my family too.”

But when he confronts her, she can only ask: “Who’s Aaron?”

Meanwhile, Ben and Sayid wait in an underground parking lot. Mr. Norton, the lawyer, arrives. He tells Ben that Hurley is sure to get out of jail – the police have concluded that the first murder, outside the asylum, was committed before Hurley broke out.

On the beach, while Sawyer continues to tell Juliet about seeing Kate, he notices her nose is bleeding. They find some wreckage on the beach, including things written in French. Cut to a bunch of Frenchmen in a raft. They find a body floating in the water. When I was watching I would have bet a million dollars it was Rousseau, but it turns out to be JIN!

At the marina, Jack, Kate, Ben and Sayid rendezvous. Kate is freaked out by Ben’s appearance, but Jack tries to convince her the uber-Other is on their side. Kate accusses Ben of being the one behind the lawyer. Ben fesses up, yeah it was me. While all this is going on, we see Sun watching, with Aaron in the backseat.

The show ends with Jin waking up on the beach. The lone (young) Frenchwoman in the group introduces herself: Danielle Rousseau.

Top Obama Economic Adviser Admits Stimulus Bill Might not Create Jobs

The great secret about President Obama’s stimulus bill is that it is not a stimulus bill. With only 12 cents on the dollar going to actual stimulating projects this bill is actually the biggest spending bill ever proposed in congress. And people wonder why Democrats are called tax and spend liberals. A close look at this bill is justification of that label.
One of the claims that then president-elect Obama claimed was that this stimulus bill would create 3 million jobs. This claim was later amended to the less aggressive claim that the bill would create or save 3 million jobs.
Now that has changed again because according to this article President Obama’s top economic adviser is admitting that there is “considerable uncertainty” in regards to any of Obama’s claims of job creation. And this is coming from the woman who created that number in the first place.
It should be understood that all of the estimates presented in this memo are subject to significant margins of error,” they said. “There is the obvious uncertainty that comes from modeling a hypothetical package rather than the final legislation passed by the Congress. But, there is the more fundamental uncertainty that comes with any estimate of the effects of a program. Our estimates of economic relationships and rules of thumb are derived from historical experience and so will not apply exactly in any given episode. Furthermore, the uncertainty is surely higher than normal now because the current recession is unusual both in its fundamental causes and its severity.
Let me sum up that statement for you.
President Obama had no real plan, that is evidenced by the phrase, “There is the obvious uncertainty that comes from modeling a hypothetical package”, he has to wait to see what congress sends him. There is a huge margin of error calculated into the number of jobs that would be created even though the administration promoted these numbers as facts, so in other words, either President Obama, or more likely Christina Romer, pulled these numbers out of his/her ass.
I think they can put these numbers right back where they came from.

Pope insists Bishop Richard Williamson must renounce Holocaust denial

The Pope has ordered an ultra-conservative bishop from Britain to recant his denial that Jews died in gas chambers during the Holocaust.

In a move designed to head off condemnation, Pope Benedict XVI ordered Bishop Richard Williamson to unequivocally and publicly renounce his claims that there were no gas chambers and that fewer than 300,000 Jews died in the Nazi death camps instead of the accepted figure of six million.

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and many politicians, prelates and faith leaders have rounded on the Pope after his decision to lift excommunications on Bishop Williamson, an Old Wykehamist and Cambridge graduate, and three other traditionalist bishops.

The Vatican said: “Bishop Williamson, in order to be admitted to episcopal functions within the Church, will have to take his distance, in an absolutely unequivocal and public fashion, from his position on the Shoah, which the Holy Father was not aware of when the excommunication was lifted.”

RIP: The Cramps frontman Lux Interior, dead at 60

The Cramps’ Lux Interior (born Erick Lee Purkhiser) died this past weekend. My boss at the record store just told me and a few sites back him up.

I try not to get too sappy about death — because after a certain point it’s kind of expected; and it’s always inevitable — but The Cramps’ influence really hit me hard while I was in college. Their album Stay Sick is one that smashed me over the head and encouraged me to dig around in the psychobilly genre a bit. Lux was arguably the last in the line of Iggy Pop: frontmen who could make your jaw drop on stage as you fear for their safety, but then go home and write incredible, passionate and beautiful songs at home.

Here’s a video of The Cramps playing at the Napa State Mental Hospital, performing “Human Fly.”

Obama Signs Health Insurance Bill for Low-Income Children

Four million low-income kids can now join another 7 million children with health coverage after President Obama this afternoon signed a bill renewing the state-based program for low-income children for another four and a half years.

The White House ceremony came just hours after the House gave final approval (290-135) to the bill and caps a nearly two-year struggle to extend health care coverage to children whose families cannot afford private insurance. With the program’s expansion, 11 million children are now covered.

In signing the bill, Obama said:

Since it was created more than 10 years ago, the Children’s Health Insurance Program has been a lifeline for millions of children whose parents work full-time and don’t qualify for Medicaid, but, through no fault of their own, don’t have and can’t afford private insurance.

Before today’s vote, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called today “a special day for us in the House.”

We’re going to help 11 million children….In the course of the past two years, we have passed this bill a number of times in the House. Today after we pass it, it will go to the president’s desk.

The move to renew the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and extend coverage to more children began in 2007. But former President George W. Bush first vetoed the renewal in October 2007. After a second bill—revised to meet Bush’s objections to the original bill—passed with bipartisan support, Bush vetoed that bill in December 2007. Congress eventually passed a temporary reauthorization that did not expand coverage to more children and which expires March 31.

This year, the House first passed the children’s health bill Jan. 9, and the Senate followed on Jan. 29. Today’s House vote was required because of some minor differences between the House and Senate versions.
